COVID-19 Updates

Status of COVID-19 Project: Final Update – 30 September 2020

Status of COVID-19 Project: 14 September 2020

On 17 March 2020, at what was to be our last physical meeting, a group of Rotarians sitting together at lunch discussed our club’s response to the impending pandemic. Over the next few days this group morphed into the core of a project committee and thus the Rotary Knysna COVID-19 project began.

Six months later, our journey is coming to an end. Our weekly soup kitchen deliveries have scaled down and will end on 30 September.

A HUGE thank you to our sponsors and our generous donors, many of whom have donated more than once. Your financial support has played a vital role in the provision of food security to the greater Knysna community. Without you it would have been impossible for our club to implement and sustain a project of this magnitude.

The Social and Humanitarian Relief Programme for Knysna has been a collaborative effort and we’d like to pay tribute to our partner service organisations:

  • Knysna Hope
  • Knysna Initiative for Learning & Teaching
  • Pam Booth and team from the Knysna Municipality
  • E’Pap Children’s Feeding Project
  • Knysna Education Trust
  • Youth for Christ
  • Greater Knysna Business Chamber
  • Maxwell Knysna Feeding Scheme

Special mention must be made of the hardworking and cheerful volunteers at the 18 soup kitchens supported by Rotary.

THANK YOU ALL!

Status of COVID-19 Project

Once again a HUGE thank you to our donors, a number of whom have supported us several times throughout the last 4 months. Without you we would not have been unable to sustain our food relief project and we regret that we don’t have email addresses for many of you, so have been unable to thank you personally. Our weekly soup kitchen delivery run has extended and now includes 18 feeding schemes stretching from Brackenhill through to Rheenendal. A recent development is Rotary’s association with the Maxwell Knysna Feeding Scheme and we are distributing Maxwell on the Go 20, a new nutritional product, to various soup kitchens. We continue to deliver chicken procured by KILT to both residential care homes and soup kitchens. Our club has also partnered with the Greater Knysna Business Chamber to assist the local business owners they support.

Status of COVID-19 Project

The Social and Humanitarian Relief Programme for Knysna is in its fourth month. Our club set itself an initial target to assist 4500 households with food relief. However, generous financial support from donors has enabled us to reach twice that number.

Knysna Rotary’s contribution to the project has moved on from first response humanitarian aid and we are no longer sending out grocery vouchers and food parcels in bulk.

We are now focusing on targeted food relief for specific sets of circumstances. To this end we have recently partnered with the Greater Knysna Business Chamber.

We continue to provide weekly support to 16 soup kitchens across a spread of areas within the Knysna municipal district. These soup kitchens receive both Rotary soup hampers and frozen chicken procured by KILT through the Do More Foundation. We are grateful to Knysna Hope for their invaluable logistical support to Rotary during these weekly deliveries.

A HUGE thank you to all our donors, many of whom have donated more than once. Without you it would have been impossible for our club to implement and sustain a project of this magnitude.

Food security remains a serious challenge for many Knysna residents. We believe that this will be the case for some time to come, given the ongoing threat of COVID-19 and the regulations in place to stop the spread.

Status of COVID-19 Project

The Social and Humanitarian Relief Programme for Knysna has now entered its fourth month. Our club set itself an initial target to assist 4500 households with food relief. However, generous support from partners and donors has enabled us to reach twice that number.

Knysna Rotary’s contribution to the project has moved on from first response humanitarian aid and we are no longer sending out grocery vouchers and food parcels in bulk.

We are now focusing on targeted food relief for specific sets of circumstances.

We continue to provide weekly support to 16 soup kitchens across a spread of areas within the Knysna municipal district. These soup kitchens receive both Rotary soup hampers and frozen chicken procured by KILT through the Do More Foundation. The team from partner organisation, Knysna Hope, has provided huge logistical support to Rotary during these weekly deliveries.

A huge thank you to all our donors! Without you it would have been impossible for our club to implement and sustain a project of this magnitude. Some thank you notes received:

“Thanks a lot and thanks again Knysna Rotary, I’ve received a voucher earlier, God bless.”

“I’ve just received my voucher from Knysna Rotary and I have to say they’ve really helped me during this pandemic. I’d like to thank Knysna Rotary for being a pillar of strength.”

“Good evening Knysna Rotary team, I’d like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who helped me. May God bless you, thank you, thank you, thank you.”

From two of our soup kitchen “souperstars”:

“Thank you so much for the grocery donations – it would be downhill without these.”

“The impact on my community is visible. People are so grateful to receive a meal without being judged. There are less people going hungry to bed. I think, in this time of this pandemic, the real unsung heroes come to the forefront. Much appreciation, Knysna Rotary.”

Status of COVID-19 Project

A HUGE thank you to ALL who have contributed to the Rotary Knysna COVID-19 food relief fund for the greater Knysna area. Through your generosity, donations from the public now stand at R888 000. To date our club, with the support of KILT and other partner organisations, has distributed 2693 parcels, 4091 vouchers and 105 soup kitchen hampers. Some thank you notes received from those you’ve enabled us to help thus far:

“Wow, what a wonderful surprise food gift I came home to yesterday…it felt like Christmas! I’m so thankful and touched by this kindness”

“I would like to thank Rotary Knysna for being with me and my family during these tough times of the pandemic. You came through when I had no hope as to where or how I would feed my family. The parcels kept us going until now and I am very grateful”

“Just want to thank the Knysna Rotary Club for the food parcel we received yesterday. Without your parcel we would not have survived this coming month”

“Big thank you for the food vouchers that got me eating again after 4 days of no food”

The food relief project has been running for over two months and we’re not done yet! Rotary will continue to assist with targeted food relief for as long as our donor funding permits.

ROTARIANS IN ACTION: Status of Covid-19 Project

A big THANK YOU to ALL who have donated through the Rotary bank account to the Social and Humanitarian Relief Programme for Knysna.

Rotary’s involvement in the project includes:

  1. The initiation of taxi and taxi rank sanitisation, a project now managed by the Knysna Municipality.
  2. Provision of soap distributed to targeted areas by the Municipal Cleansing department, together with a Western Cape Covid-19 information brochure.
  3. Allocation and distribution of food vouchers, food parcels and soup kitchen packs.

To date Rotary Knysna, with the support of KILT and working in partnership with the Knysna Municipality, has distributed food assistance to 4565 local households. We have also provided 35 food packs to soup kitchens.

A project of this scale would not be possible without support from:

  • Knysna Hope, who manage the voucher issuing process.
  • The tireless Pam Booth and her logistics team from the Knysna Municipality.

Rotary remains deeply committed to providing far reaching humanitarian aid to our community. We will continue to assist with targeted food relief for as long as our donor funding permits.

A message from President Julie Staub and the Rotary Club of Knysna

Status of COVID-19 Food Security Project

Knysna Rotary, KILT, other partner organisations and generous donors remain committed to assisting those local residents whose income has been affected by lockdown. To date we have helped 3370 households with food relief in the form of vouchers or parcels. We see this as a long term project and will provide targeted food aid for as long as our donor funding permits.

Thank you

We would like to thank all those who have donated and continue to donate through the Knysna Rotary bank account to the Social and Humanitarian Relief Programme. It is through your support that we’ve been able to reach out to so many during the last month and that we can take the project forward.

News

A recent development is that we are now assisting a number of vetted and licensed soup kitchens across a spread of areas.

Applications and Database

The central database of applications for aid will go offline for maintenance on Monday afternoon. This does not mean that the programme is ending and we shall certainly continue to distribute food relief.  However, there are currently more than 17 000 names on the database. We are picking up duplicates, double dippers and sadly, many people with no legitimate claims for lockdown aid who have tried to “cheat” the system. We are accountable to our partners, donors and auditors to ensure that assistance reaches those who need it most, and for this we need to have accurate data.

Who are we Helping?

As stated on the application form, we are not in a position to assist those who receive UIF, pensions and grants. Multiple applications from one household cannot be supported.

A Final Message

Please rest assured that, as was the case after the June 2017 fires, Knysna Rotary remains deeply committed to providing far reaching humanitarian aid to our community.
